Vesuvius is chiefly known for it’s volcanic eruption in AD79, which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. The last eruption was in 1944 and today you just see some small plumes of steam rising from the outer edges of the crater. You can drive most of the way up the volcano by following the parco del vesuvio signs. You eventually reach a car park where you can walk the last few hundred metres to the rim of the crater.
